V. I. VERNADSKY AND V. A. OBRUCHEV: TWO PERSONS IN THE 150-YEAR HISTORY OF THE RUSSIAN GEOLOGY. Pt I. CITIZENS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE

V. F. Svinyin

The paper briefly compares the lives and careers of two outstanding Russian geologists of the 19-20th centuries – V.I. Vernadsky and V.A. Obruchev. They both followed their own path, despite being peers and connected in professional and personal ways. The biographies of these two academicians have never been considered from this viewpoint. Meanwhile, such analysis may result in some interesting conclusions about the development of the Russian geological science. The first part considers the pre-Soviet period of the scientists’ life and research activity.

Key words: Vernadsky, Obruchev, history of geology, geochemistry, geology of Siberia, Tomsk Technological Institute, Taurida University.
