GENESIS OF HIGH-TERRACE DEPOSITS ALONG THE CHUYA AND KATUN RIVERS

I. D. Zolnikov, E. V. Deev, D. V. Nazarov, S. A. Kotler

It was discovered that the high-terrace strata outcropping within the Chuya River valley contain parallellayered gruss and debris, which indicate giant glacial fl oods. The same area is characterized by boulder-block formations indicating the mudfl ow facies of glacial superfl oods. Comparative analysis of structural and textural features of rocks that form high terraces in the sections of Chuya and Katun rivers has shown similarity of facies and therefore the same genesis. Results of fi eld studies are accompanied by photographs, which excludes subjectivity of macro-visual identifi cation in fi eld conditions.

Key words: high terraces, glacial superfloods, Quaternary deposits, Gorny Altai.
