V. I. VERNADSKY AND V. A. OBRUCHEV: TWO PERSONS IN THE 150-YEAR HISTORY OF THE RUSSIAN GEOLOGY. Pt II. SOVIET CITIZENS, ACADEMICIANS, LAUREATES

V. F. Svinyin

The second part of the article covers personal lives and professional activity of geological scientists V. I. Vernadsky and V. A. Obruchev during the Soviet times. Their biographies were closely connected with the USSR political history of 1920–1940. The historical developments forced the scientists to choose carefully their ways of behavior. Talent, outstanding scientific merits, and even membership in the Academy not always guaranteed the officials’ approval. There are numerous evidences of fatal tragedies in lives of outstanding scientists. It was essential to find a alance between good relationships with the authorities and personal moral and professional principles. The article highlights rather different strategy balances of V. I. Vernadsky and V. A. Obruchev due to differences in their characters as well as communication environments. Eventually both strategies turned out to be winning, as the scientists not only saved their lives, but also attained honor and respect of both authorities and public towards the end of their lives.

Key words: Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky, Vladimir Afanasievich Obruchev, geochemistry, biosphere, Moscow Mining Academy, the USSR Academy of Sciences, repressed geologists.
