THE ROLE OF SNIIGGiMS IN PROSPECTING FOR NON-KIMBERLITE MAGMATOGENE DIAMOND SOURCES (LAMPROITES AND “TUFFISITES”) WITHIN THE SIBERIAN PLATFORM

Yu. I. Loskutov

The paper considers the history of study and exploration of lamproites and diamond-bearing tuffisites within the Siberian Platform carried out by geologists of SNIIGGiMS and compares it with the history of exploration for diamond ore bodies in the Urals. The first prospecting traverse of SNIIGGiMS’s geologists in the Siberian Platform along the Anabar River took place in 1981, and in 1984 the first recommendation was given for exploration for lamproite bodies in the north of the Siberian Platform and their testing for diamond occurrences. The geologists of SNIIGGiMS were among the first to suggest the new type of ore bodies of the unique Ebelyakh placers in the Siberian Platform, which are explosive bodies of sand lamproite tuffs (“tuffisites”). The history of discovery of the “tuffisite” diamond-bearing deposits in the Urals is also described and compared with the search for similar deposits in the north of the Siberian Platform. It took more than fifty years to find the diamond ore bodies in the Urals. The unique Ebelyakh diamond placer was discovered fifty years ago as well. The tuffisited were defined to be diamond-bearing, yet no commercial deposits have been discovered.

Key words: the Siberian Platform, the Urals, diamonds, lamproites, tuffisites, SNIIGGiMS.
