DEVONIAN OF THE WEST SIBERIAN OIL AND GAS PROVINCE: PROBLEM OF BOUNDARIES AND VOLUME OF STAGES

S. N. Makarenko, S. A. Rodygin, N. I. Savina

The article presents data on the boundaries of stages and series of the Devonian system in the West Siberian oil and gas province. An attempt to correlate them with the appropriate boundaries of the International stratigraphic chart is made. The chart is based on the conodont zonal standard. Boundaries of some stages and series in regional stratigraphic charts do not coincide with the SDS (Subcomission on Devonian stratigraphy) recommendations and a clarification is required. The West Siberian oil and gas province is characterized by predominance of two sections types: a reef type on the one hand and a terrigenous-carbonate type depression on the other hand. In some parts of the sections conodonts are rare, elsewhere they do not exist. The illustrations show the distribution of the conodonts and other fossils through the sections. The correlation of local and regional boundaries with the same of the Devonian stages and series takes into account not only data on the conodonts, but also on ostracods, stromatoporoids and other groups of fauna, as well as regional abiotic and biotic events allocated by the lithological characteristics of the deposit and changes in the composition of the fossil complexes. The biggest problems in the boundaries conducting exist at the base of the Devonian section (Lochkovian and Pragian stages). The boundaries of Emsian, Givetian, Frasnian stages have better justification based on conodonts and other fossils.

Key words: Devonian, West Siberia, boundaries of stages.
