CONTRIBUTION OF THE URAL STATE MINING UNIVERSITY TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MINERAL RESOURCE BASE OF RUSSIA AND THE CIS COUNTRIES
The higher geological education in the Urals appeared in 1914, when the Ural Mining Institute was found. Geologist K. K. Matveev became its first rector in Soviet times. Division into faculties (geological prospecting and mining ones) took place in 1920. The Mining Institute became the founder of geophysicists training in Russia. In 1924 professor P.K. Sobolevskiy set up the laboratory of magnetometry and later laboratories of ferromagnetism, micromagnetism, electrometry, subsurface geometry and seismic survey. At the moment the total number of full-time students is 3663 persons, 704 of them are students of the geology and geophysics faculty. The maximum number of future geologists and geophysicists (more than annyal 2200 persons) studied in the University at the end of 1980s. Over the 100 years of the Mining universitys existence 12707 mining engineers, geologists and geophysicists have been prepared. There are 2 Heroes of Socialist Labour, 52 laureates of the USSR and Russian Federation State Prizes, 92 discoverers of mineral deposits among them.
