HOW THE TALNAKHSKOYE-OKTYABRSKOYE DEPOSIT WAS DISCOVERED

V. S. Staroseltsev

The history of discovering sulphide-copper-nickel-platinum ore deposits in the Norilsk Region starting with the middle of the 19th century and ending with the discovery of the Talnakhskoye deposit is briefly described. The paper gives attention to the formation of the author’s independent way of thinking which played the decisive role in the method of searching by glacial boulders used in forecasting the Talnakhskoye location. In interpreting ore glacial boulders drift there appeared some points of view of experts from both Norilsk complex prospecting expedition and Research Institute of Arctic Geology. The only right conclusion about the location of a native source of the ore boulders was made by the author in “Conclusion” of the report of the party headed by him in 1959. That conclusion was ignored by V. N. Egorov, chief geologist of the expedition, but used by G. D. Maslov who performed his duties and became a Hero of Socialist Labour. Many of his assistants became discoverers of the Talnakhskoye deposit and then the Oktyabrskoye one being its continuation in the shape of a sand-glass watch.

Key words: independent way of thinking, ore glacial boulders, accessory-boulders, aureole of ore boulders drift, native source.
