The Yamal petroleum region is one of major strategic petroleum regions in Russia. The build-up of gas production in Russia is tightly connected to the creation of new gas production centres in the Yamal Peninsula and to the placing into production of the Novoportovoe, Bovanenkovskoye, and Kharasaveyskoye fields unique in hydrocarbon reserves. The oil and gas content in the Yamal petroleum region is due to four macroplays: Albian-Cenomanian, Neocomian-Aptian, Jurassic, and Paleozoic. In the Jurassic macroplay, the Bathonian regional reservoir, which includes J2 pay bed and the Callovian – Upper Jurassic seal, is the most promising for oil and gas. The present paper contains the results of integrated studies on structure modelling, revealing of formation conditions, estimate of reservoir and sealing properties, as well as quantitative estimate of petroleum potential of the Bathonian regional reservoir and J2 bed, with identifying exploration targets in the Yamal petroleum region.
