The safety and economic feasibility of a coal-seam production is largely based on the stable operation of modern tunneling equipment. Identification of such heterogeneities of coal seam as sand down-cuttings and other is an important element of this. Information on the geometry of coal seams and their large-scale characteristics is often provided by a relatively dense network of exploration wells, however, these data are usually insufficient to identify such local features of the coal seam structure as down-cuttings. The present work shows the applicability of new method by means of wave field modeling. This method is based on focusing channel waves scattering on the seam heterogeneity. The result of applying the method is a medium image whereon an energy is focused at the combined point and at the point of the simulated scatterer. It is obvious that the practical applicability of the approach is based on the signal extraction against the background of intense surface noises and noise attenuation is supposed to be achieved through crosscorrelation processing.
