THE STORY OF AKADEMGORODOK, NOVOSIBIRSK AS THE HEART OF FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED GEOSCIENCES IN SIBERIA​

This article aims to describe how academic science evolved in Siberia from the 18th to the 21st centuries, with a particular focus on geological and geophysical sciences. The factors that prompted and facilitated the emergence of Akademgorodok, a home to numerous research institutes near Novosibirsk are particularized. The critical role of prominent scientists and leading officials in creating this major academic science center is discussed.
